Under the Covers

I never thought I would hear Richard Thompson cover a Britney Spears song.  Here he is covering 'Oops!...I Did It Again'.  In my opinion, his version is much better than the original.

Monsters Of Folk

s
The Monsters Of Folk appeared on Conan O'Brien this past Wednesday playing 'Say Please'. I think they sounded great. The big surprise was Will Johnson of Centro-matic playing drums. It is rumored Will is going to be the drummer when the band goes out on the road this fall. Monsters Of Folk's new album is now available and what I have heard thus far it sounds good.

Here is the band in the studio doing 'The Right Place'.

Under the Covers

'Once I was a rich man, now I am so poor.  But never in my sweet short life have I felt like this before.'
Here are several covers of the Rolling Stones' 'No Expectations' from Beggars Banquet.  Johnny Cash and Odetta cover the song like it was written for them.  The Dirtbombs, Califone and Soulsavers update the song but still try to stick with the roots of the original.  Please go out and discover these artists.

Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band

I first heard about The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band on My Old Kentucky Blog earlier this year.  I like their sound, they have funny lyrics and there is a gal named Breezy who plays washboard.  The band hails from Indianapolis.  Go buy their latest album The Whole Fam Damnily.  If you do not like the album you can at least buy a washboard to support the band.

The Black Keys Are Releasing A Rap Album?

The rock-blues duo from Akron, OH is collaborating with a variety of rap artists to release a new album on November 27th (Black Friday).  They are calling the project Blakroc.  It will be interesting how the Black Keys sound with the likes of Mos Def and Q-Tip.  The little trailer above is cool and the first track sounds pretty good.

Heartless Bastards

My friend David is a fan of The Heartless Bastards.  The female lead singer has a very haunting howlish voice.  The band is originally from Ohio and now resides in Austin, TX.  They were discovered by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys.
The Heartless Bastards just announced that they will be touring with Wolfmother this fall.  They will be in Dallas at the House of Blues on Oct 29.  This show should be interesting because it offers a contrast in styles.  Check them out.

'You can fool some people sometimes, but you can't fool all the people all the time.  So, now we see the light.  We gonna stand up for our rights!'

A.A. Bondy

After his band Verbena broke up in 2003, A.A. Bondy went into to hiatus for several years.  In 2007 he released his solo debut, American Hearts which received critical acclaim.  This month he released his follow-up album, When the Devil's Loose.  He is worth checking out.

Aquarium Drunkard has a good interview with A.A. Bondy.

When I was looking for The Rolling Stones with Jack White video yesterday I stumbled upon a video with Loretta Lynn and Jack.  Jack produced Loretta's album Van Lear Rose.  It is a great album.
